Course Description
This is our most popular complete beginners sewing course.You will learn how to sew from scratch and quickly progress to a more accomplished level of sewing and making your own simple garments. In this course you will develop a sound set of sewing machine skills and knowledge of fabrics. This beginners sewing course will give you the confidence to use a sewing machine on your own and teach you to attempt more ambitious sewing projects, clothes making and alterations.

If you've never touched a sewing machine before and want to learn about sewing from the very beginning, then this is course for you.
Course Schedule
This beginners sewing course is usually made up of 4 x 3 hour sessions run over 4 consecutive weeks, but we also schedule crash courses. You can check our schedule by clicking the book button.
Session 1 - Make a Cushion
During the first three hour session you will be introduced to your sewing machine and taught basic skills in order to build confidence to include: winding a bobbin, threading the machine, changing a needle, sewing straight lines, curves and corners, finishing seams and reverse stitching. You will have the chance to start working on your cushion cover. Please bring along fabric your own choice to suit your taste. The size needs to be:
- Cushion fabric
- - 50cm of 115cm or 140cm wide woven cotton (non stretchy)
- - 45cm x 45cm cushion insert
Session 2 - Using a Skirt Pattern
In the second session you'll progress and learn how to use a commercial pattern, modifying it to fit your body measurements. You will lay, mark and pin the pattern to the fabric and cut it out. You will learn what all the symbols mean. Handle the tools, learn the methods and practice the terminology of flat pattern cutting. You will be shown how to take your own measurements and cut your own pattern for making a skirt. Please bring along the following materials:
- Skirt fabric - size 8-14
- - 1.4m (140cm) of 115cm wide woven cotton (non stretchy) OR
- - 1m (100cm) of 140cm wide woven cotton (non stretchy)
- - Regular zip (18-20 cm long) & matching thread
- Skirt fabric - size 16-18
- - 1.8m (180cm) of 115cm wide woven cotton (non stretchy) OR
- - 1.2m (120cm) of 140cm wide woven cotton (non stretchy)
- - Regular zip (18-20 cm long) and matching thread
Session 3 - Construct Your Skirt
In the third session of the course you will learn a series of techniques including inserting lapped zips, hemming & using different sewing machine feet. You will start putting your skirt together, which will be ready for fitting by the end of the class.
Session 4 - Finish Your Skirt
During the last session you will put all your learnt skills into place. You will construct a waistband, attach an interfacing and complete your project walking away with a new, perfectly fitted A-line skirt made by you.
Just to sew things up...
All machines, and equipment are provided, although if you would like to bring your own sewing machine to learn on, you are welcome to. You can buy fabric from us, we have a selection for £18 (available when booking the class). Refreshments and biscuits are included and a glass of wine for all evening classes to help create a seamless atmosphere.
