Course Description

This 6 hour trouser/short making course is designed for those who would like to progress to making their own clothes or have a passion to create their own styles and unique designs. For these sewing classes you will need to have intermediate sewing skills. Our students usually progress to this course having already completed our Sew Complete or Sew Capable course.

Course Schedule

This sewing course is usually made up of 2 x 3 hour sessions run over 2 consecutive weeks, but we also schedule crash courses. You can check our schedule by clicking the book button.

What will I learn?

During this trouser/short making course you will learn to use a commercial pattern, choosing to make either shorts, ankle or full length trousers. You will sew seams and darts, insert an invisible zip, attach a facing and finish your trousers ready to wear. Areas we cover include:

- Set up a sewing machine

- Take measurements

- Construct darts

- Understanding patterns - what do the symbols mean?

- Reading/laying/cutting out of pattern and fabrics

- Attaching yoke

- Top stitching

- Simple decorative stitching with machine

What do I need to bring?

If you want to use your own fabric for this class you will need to bring along:

Trouser fabric - size 8-14

- Either 2.0m (200cm) of 115cm wide woven cotton

- Or 1.6m (160cm) of 140cm wide woven cotton

Shorts fabric - size 8-14

- Either 1.0m (100cm) of 115cm wide woven cotton

- Or 0.6m (60cm) of 140cm wide woven cotton

Suitable fabrics:

- linen blends, cotton, gabardine, suiting fabric and fabrics with some stretch

Trouser fabric - size 16-18

- Either 2.4m (240cm) of 115cm wide woven cotton

- Or 2.0m (200cm) of 140cm wide woven cotton

Shorts fabric - size 16-18

- Either 1.2m (120cm) of 115cm wide woven cotton

- Or 0.8m (80cm) of 140cm wide woven cotton

Suitable fabrics:

- linen blends, cotton, gabardine, suiting fabric and fabrics with some stretch

Also required for either project

- Matching thread

- Matching invisible zip (20-30 cm long)

Just to sew things up...

All machines and equipment are provided, although if you would like to bring your own sewing machine to learn on, you are welcome to do so. You can buy all materials needed for this course for £18 trouser (£9 shorts), available when booking the course). Refreshments and biscuits are included and a glass of wine for all evening classes to help create a seamless atmosphere..
